Russia’s top PM says EU pays US outrageous prices for gas
During a parliamentary budget discussion on Thursday, Volodin likened American LNG to an expensive perfume, suggesting that European governments treat energy purchases like a luxury indulgence rather than a necessary commodity.
“The gas supplied from America to Europe is not Chanel. But they’ve valued its smell just as they would a French perfume. They’re buying it, destroying their economy. And they blew up our pipelines, making things worse for themselves,” he said.
The statement alludes to the 2022 explosions that damaged the Nord Stream pipelines connecting Russia and Germany beneath the Baltic Sea. While German authorities have suggested the incident could have involved a small number of Ukrainian nationals, Moscow has dismissed this explanation as “ridiculous,” instead asserting that the operation was orchestrated by the United States during President Joe Biden’s administration.
Volodin went on to criticize EU leadership more broadly, claiming that it has become clear that these governments “have no responsible attitude toward their own citizens.”
Following the intensification of the conflict in Ukraine in 2022, the EU unveiled plans aimed at reducing its dependence on Russian energy, including a gradual phase-out of Russian gas, oil, and nuclear fuel by 2027. However, nations such as Hungary and Slovakia, which rely heavily on Russian gas, have voiced strong objections, arguing that the proposed timeline is impractical and would drive up prices while threatening energy security.
